It’s All About Motion
This new YMCA 5k Race Series will prove to be one of the greatest events they’ve ever sponsored. After all, anything that encourages people to become more active should be heralded, nurtured and supported.
For years now, I’ve been working with people who come in with physical limitations. These limitations, such as sore backs, necks, hips, feet, etc. prevent them from being able to exercise or move on a regular basis. What people never think about is the huge domino-effect this has on their life. After all, if you can’t move due to pain, you’re probably not going to move.
One of the first laws of nature we learned in school stated, “If you don’t use it, you lose it”. Which means, if you don’t figure out a way to get past the pain, it’s the beginning of the end. How important is motion? Think of this; if you don’t move on a regular basis, you gain weight. If you don’t move on a regular basis, your blood pressure rises. Your cholesterol rises. And the kicker is, I’ve not yet a person who’s excited with a life of inactivity and worsening health. Not only boredom sets in, but so does depression. All in all, this is not a goal many aspire for.
So, what’s the answer. Fight it. Don’t accept anyone telling you there are no answers. Seek answers from anyone, everyone, until you find someone who can help you get active again without hurting. It’s not an option, you MUST get active. Walking. Running. Cycling. Swimming. Something. And, there is always an answer. Remember, “optimism” has won more battles in life than mere strength.
This Y Series, with Bill Rodgers involved, will prove to be the very catalyst for many people, and that excites me. A 5k race is a doable distance for anyone. The first step for anyone to complete one or more of these races is to make the decision to do it. Sign up today for one or more of these races. Pay your money. Mark it on your calendar. Tell your friends you’ll be doing it. This self-imposed pressure now forces you to seek answers. To get active. To do the unthinkable. And for many, that’s the only way to get it done. Because, what you’ll learn is, the undoable is doable.
Call today and sign up for your first race. And, once you experience the thrill of such a feat, you’ll understand what drives so many to get out there and participate in these great events. And, thank you to the Capital District YMCA for setting up this great series. See you there.
